Christmas Cupcake Designs Using Fondant

Cupcakes decorated with Christmas themes are perfect gifts or a festive way to end a holiday meal with family and friends. Santa, snowmen and the most famous reindeer of all can be created easily with some cutout colored fondant and a couple tablespoons of icing. These designs are easy enough for kids to put together! Start all the cupcakes with your favorite recipe and a layer of icing on the top.

Wreath

To make these festive wreath cupcakes you will need:
  • Green fondant
  • Red fondant
  • White edible glitter
  • Small leaf cutter
  1. Roll out the green fondant and cut out many small leaves using the cutter. You will need approximately 20 leaves per wreath. attach the leaves at varying angles around the edge of the cupcake to create a wreath. Use a little water or icing to attach the leaves on top of each other.
  2. To create the bow roll a small amount of red fondant into a long snake and flatten it with your fingers.Fold the center part of the snake into two loops for the bow and cut the long ends off to create the ribbons. Roll a small ball of red fondant and press it into the center of the loops to create the knot of the bow. Attach the bow to the completed wreath and sprinkle with glitter.

Snowflake

To create snowflake cupcakes you will need:
  • White fondant
  • Snowflake cutter
  • White glitter
  • Gold glitter

Roll out white fondant and cut out snowflakes.Brush flakes with water and sprinkle them with glitter. Top the cupcakes with a little gold glitter and then add a pretty finished snowflake on each. You can also accent the flakes with silver dragees or piped designs using royal icing

Snowman

To make happy snowman cupcakes you will need:
  • Orange fondant
  • Dark brown or black fondant
  • Green fondant
  • Red fondant
  • White fondant
  • Light blue fondant
  • Very small heart cutter
  • Small heart cutter
  • Small leaf cutter
  • Large circle cutter
  • Sharp paring knife

  1. To create the eyes for the cupcake roll out white fondant and cut a heart out with the larger cutter.Roll out the light blue fondant and cut out a heart using the smallest cutter. Make two small balls of black fondant for the pupils and two tiny white balls for the very center part of the eye. Brush the white circle with a little water and press the light blue heart onto the white one lining up the tops. Press the black circles onto the light blue heart close to the top and add the tiny white circles in the center of the black ones.Cut off the hearts points to creat a flat top.
  2. Roll out the red fondant and cut out a circle that is the slightly larger than the cupcake surface. Cut the circle in half and press the half circle just above the eyes to create a hat. Cut a strip off the edge of the remaining half circle to create the band of the hat. Score the length of the band using a paring knife creating tiny vertical lines and stick the band on the hat.
  3. Roll out the green fondant and cut out three small leaves for a holly accent. Stick the leaves onto the hat creating a three leaf pattern.Roll tiny red fondant balls for the berries on the holly and stick them into the center of the leaves.
  4. Make a cone shape with the orange fondant to look like a fat carrot and stick it below the eyes on the cupcake using a little icing.

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

To make Rudolph cupcakes you will need:
  • Brown fondant
  • Dark brown or black fondant
  • Green fondant
  • Red fondant
  • White fondant
  • Light blue fondant
  • Very small heart cutter
  • Small heart cutter
  • Small leaf cutter
  • Circle cutter
  • Sharp paring knife
  1. Create the eyes using the same method as step one in the snowman cupcakes attaching them on the lower half of the cupcake.
  2. Roll out the brown fondant and cut out a circle that is slightly larger than the top of the cupcake and press it on the cupcake. Attach the eyes to the lower half of the brown circle using a bit of icing taking care to leave room for the antlers.
  3. Roll out the dark brown fondant and cut out antler shapes using a sharp paring knife.They do not have to be identical. Attach to top of cupcake above the eyes using icing or water.
  4. Roll out the green fondant and cut out three small leaves for a holly accent on the antlers. Stick the leaves onto one antler creating a three leaf pattern.
  5. Roll red fondant into a ball and flatten it for Rudolph's nose. It should be almost as big as the eyes. Roll out tiny red balls for the berries on the holly.attach the nose below the eyes and stick the tiny berries to the center of the holly.
  6. Take a tiny piece of white fondant and shape a little crescent to put on the bright red nose to make it look shiny.Attach the crescent on the top part of the nose.

Santa Claus

To make Santa Claus cupcakes you will need:
  • Dark brown or black fondant
  • Green fondant
  • Red fondant
  • White fondant
  • Light blue fondant
  • Very small heart cutter
  • Small heart cutter
  • Small leaf cutter
  • Large circle cutter
  • Sharp paring knife
  1. Create the eyes using the same method as step one in the snowman cupcakes attaching them on the lower half of the cupcake.
  2. Roll out the red fondant and cut out a circle that is the slightly larger than the cupcake surface. Cut the circle in half and press the half circle just above the eyes to create a hat.Roll white fondant into small balls and stick them along the edge of the hat with water or icing to create the Santa hat fur accent.
  3. Roll out the green fondant and cut out three small leaves for a holly accent. Stick the leaves onto the hat creating a three leaf pattern.Roll tiny red fondant balls for the berries on the holly and stick them into the center of the leaves.
  4. Roll out the white fondant and cut out about eight small hearts for the beard.Attach the hearts with the points facing up along the bottom edge of the cupcake making two overlapping layers.
  5. Make a small ball of peach colored fondant and flatten it to create Santa's nose,which should be quite large!Attach the nose between the eyes and beard.
