A January birthday can be a perfect event for a cake with a snow scene especially for a child. Cakes don't have to be elegant and perfect for a child's birthday and your child can even help make the snow! The key is asking what your child wants on the cake to be clear about what is needed to create it.My son wanted a snowmobile,an icy river, a bridge and a lot of snow on his 10th birthday cake.

To make his cake we needed:

  • A rectangular cake
  • A sharp knife
  • White buttercream
  • Blue fondant
  • Blue sparkle gel
  • White sparkle gel
  • Fondant rocks
  • A chewy granola bar
  • Brown buttercream
  • White sparkles
  • Piping bag
  • Piping tip 233
  • Snowmobile toy

Once the cake is baked, cooled and filled it is time to cut the riverbed through the center. There is no template or correct trajectory for the river so make the outline with the knife and use a spoon to dig the bottom out taking care not to go too deep.
