Valentine's Day Decorations Kids Can Make

Here in the Great White Canadian North we have snow days which means my children are home rather than at school where they belong and the weather is usually too wretched to be outside. These days often are spent making some type of delicious treat or decorating cakes and cupcakes together. When I have a big cake project to do that requires Rice Krispie treat constructions the kids get to sculpt using my leftovers. They think this is great fun although their creations often end up a great deal smaller than the original amount of marshmallow mixture warrants!

For Valentine's day we often make heart shaped cookies, chocolate cupcakes adorned with fondant lips and cut out Rice Krispie treats festooned with sprinkles, chocolate and dragees. There is something wonderful watching small hands use a piping bag to draw "I love you" on cookies and even the catastrophic pile of sugar, decorating accents and scraps of fondant are not a chore to clean up. So if the weather is awful, like it is here today, crack open your favorite cookbook, dust off your cake decorating tools and have some messy fun!
