I have rarely seen a dessert that is almost universally hated as fruitcake. People truly hate this dense flavorful creation usually because they hate the taste of candied fruit or the heavy texture. A well mixed fruitcake with a perfect balance between brandy and fruit is a thing of beauty and should be appreciated.
I live in Canada where fruitcake is often made around now for the Christmas season and I have to admit I like fruitcake. I actually only like one fruitcake which is the one I make from my Nana's secret recipe and take great pride in my brandy soaked bundles waiting the requisite 2 months to be consumed. So, next time someone offers you a piece of fruitcake which is fresh, not moldering for years, take a bite and try to savor its traditional spiced taste. Who knows, you might grow to like it!
