Cakes with Fresh Flowers

Cakes can be very beautiful when decorated with fresh flowers. You can create gorgeous cascades down the sides of a cake, place flowers around the tiers or simply scatter petals without arranging them.

Choose the flowers carefully taking into consideration the occasion, color scheme, flowers for the bouquet (if it is a wedding) and time of year. It is very important to make sure the blooms are not sprayed with pesticides or poisons of any kind. Organic flowers tend to be the best option when using fresh flowers and they should be gently washed thoroughly in warm water before placing them on the cake.

Just because some flowers are edible does not mean people should actually graze from the cake. Fresh flowers should only be decorations but most people believe that whatever is on their food is edible. So be very careful to only choose safe flowers for your cakes.

A list of safe flowers includes:

  • Apple Blossom
  • Begonia
  • Orchids
  • Carnations
  • Borage
  • Petunias
  • Cornflower
  • Daisy (English)
  • Freesia

  • Johnny-Jump-Up
